The Side-effect of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation



            Treatment with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is

generally safe, least invasive to the brain when compare to another methods such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), vagus nerve stimulation ( VNS) and deep brain stimulation (DBS).  In addition, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation  does not need anesthesia  , patients will be treated in out-patient basis and can drive home by themselves afterwards.

           However, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation might have some risks and side-effects  which usually mild, temporary  and typically improve in 1-2 weeks.



   Common side effects

 -  Headache
 -  Pain and scalp discomfort at the stimulation site
 -  Facial muscle twitching from stimulation of the facial nerve.
 -  Feling dizzy or lightheadedness.
 -  Discomfort from sitting for a longtime and noise during stimulation.
 
    Uncommon side effects :

    Serious side effects are very rare which include
 -  Seizure
 -  Mania especially in Bipolar disorder
 -  Hearing loss due to inadequate ear protection
   
    ** More study is needed to determine whether TMS may have any long term side effect.

Preparation

     Before treatment , psychiatrist of Mind Brain Clinic need to assess your physical, neurological and mental status whether this treatment is suitable and safe for your conditions or not. 

     You have to provide some necessary information :
     - Pregnancy status or planing of being pregnant
     - Any metal or implanted medical device
     - Any medications including the OTCs and herbs.
     - History of epilepsy, seizure, syncopal attack, mania
     - History of physical, mental disease, accidents, previos surgery.

    Little preparation is needed. Transcranial magnetic stimulation isn't invasive, doesn't require anesthesia and can be performed in a doctor's office. You don't need to arrange for someone to drive you home after treatment. Before considering treatment, however, check with your health insurance company to see whether transcranial magnetic stimulation is covered. Your policy may not cover it.
